The Three Rules
Appearance
The Three Rules is the idea of keeping a short, fixed list of deal-breakers, so you can tell a real reason not to approach from an excuse made up on the spot.
The original three
- She has to be someone you're actually attracted to. The original author's quick check was weight showing in the face and jawline. Don't let alcohol or a dry spell override your real taste.
- No co-workers. Dating at work puts your income at risk. That extends to people closely tied to your workplace, such as a colleague's sister.
- No single mothers. The author's view was that it brings complications that only show up later. This was the one rule he treated as breakable.
The real point
The rules themselves vary from person to person (common additions are friends' partners and women who are taken). What matters is:
- Decide your list in advance.
- If she's attractive to you and breaks none of your rules, you have no real reason not to start a conversation.
- "High standards" invented in the moment are usually fear in disguise.
