Talk to Everyone

From Alpha Up Wiki

The fastest way to get good at conversation is to talk to everyone, every day, about nothing in particular.

The example

A government employee shadowed a well-known cabinet secretary for a day and noticed he chatted with everyone he met:

  • He was late to a meeting because he stopped to ask an assistant about a beach photo on her desk, and whether it was a good family holiday spot.
  • He asked a janitor wearing a football cap how long he'd been a fan.
  • Leaving the building, he introduced himself to a security guard he hadn't met before.

None of it had an agenda. He was simply curious about people.

Why it matters

Many men grow up practising social skills less than women do: playing sports or games while girls spend hours talking. It's easy to catch up, but only through practice.

Easy ways to start

  • Shop queue: ask the person ahead which line they think will move fastest.
  • Bus: ask the person next to you how their day's going.
  • Bar: introduce yourself to the bartender and ask what they like making.
  • Waiting room: ask the receptionist if they've got anything fun planned for the weekend.

If someone doesn't feel like chatting, don't take it personally. Sometimes people aren't in the mood.

The payoff

Do it daily and small talk becomes automatic. Then, when someone you're attracted to sits next to you on the train, you won't freeze. Talking to strangers is already second nature.
