Be the Captain of your Ship
A common Red Pill saying is that "a man is the captain of his ship, and his partner is the first mate." This page applies the same idea to every social situation.
Every interaction is a ship
A party is a yacht and a chat with a friend is a dinghy, but either way you're the captain. That doesn't mean dominating the conversation or being the centre of attention. It means:
- You're aware of what's happening and in control of your part in it.
- You always know you can leave. If the "crew" turns sour, you can go and find better company.
Rock the boat
"Don't rock the boat" means keep everyone comfortable. The author says to ignore it. Nobody becomes respected or memorable by never stirring things up, and the best conversations happen when someone brings in a new view.
- Add an unexpected opinion or angle.
- Say what you actually think, including on controversial topics.
- Playing devil's advocate is fine. People recognise it, and often respect it.
- Some people won't like it; most will respect the nerve.
A conversation that never moves forward is dying. Keep it moving.
Key takeaway
Be in control of every interaction. If someone pushes you into a position you don't accept, either take charge of the situation or leave.
