The argument here is that many women are drawn to emotional drama and excitement (gossip, celebrity news, complaints and conflict), and that men who never create any tension come across as boring.

The contrast

The predictable man

Always eager to please, avoids conflict, backs down rather than speak up, leads a dull life. Easy to read, and in this view, easy to lose interest in.

The exciting man

Less eager to hand out attention and approval, more independent, harder to read, with an interesting life. He doesn't plead when things get heated. He calmly sets a boundary or walks away. He looks after himself, so she's aware other women notice him too.

How it shows up in game

Many techniques work because they add a little tension and unpredictability:

• Compliments and free drinks are what she's used to. A playful tease (see Cocky Comedy) is different.
• After a rejection or breakup, chasing and pleading rarely works. Calmly stepping back often makes her reconsider.
