7 step guide to getting started
A seven-step roadmap for a man starting from scratch: fix the body first, then the wardrobe, then find a purpose, and only then work on frame, game and relationships. Each step builds on the one before it, so the order matters.
1. Lifting (posture first)
Before adding weight, fix your posture, or you risk pinched nerves, bad form and injury. Three common problems:
- Uneven shoulders: usually the dominant side sits lower because that side of the chest is stronger and the back is weak. Stretch the low side against a door frame (arm raised and bent at 90°, hold about 20 seconds), then do light dumbbell front and side raises and chest flyes. Stay at a weight until both sides find it equally hard before moving up.
- Head forward / rounded upper back: mostly from long hours at a screen. Chin tucks and upper-back stretches help.
- Lower-back arch: stretch the lower back and strengthen the abs (incline walking and stomach vacuums both work).
Once posture is sorted, start a simple beginner barbell program such as StrongLifts 5×5 or Starting Strength. Big compound lifts keep you in proportion and avoid the usual beginner mistakes: training only the muscles you see in the mirror, too much arm work, and neglecting shoulders and back. Within a few months you will stand straighter and look more confident, well before the extra muscle shows.
2. Style
Don't overhaul your wardrobe until your body has changed, because clothes bought for the old shape won't fit the new one. When you do shop:
- Try several brands. Sometimes a cheap outlet brand fits you best.
- Buy short sleeves once your arms fill them out.
- Let your style come from your actual life (riding, finance, the trades), not from copying a friend.
- Phase new clothes in gradually. They feel strange for a few wears, then natural.
3. Mission
Have something you are working toward and would want to be remembered for: writing, music, teaching, a cause. It gives you direction, shapes how others see you, and grows your social circle with people who share your interests.
4. Frame
Frame is your picture of yourself: calm, confident, fun, not short on options. Steps 1–3 feed it. Many tests from women are really checks on whether that frame holds. If a comment about your height upsets you, or you demand an explanation when she cancels, the frame has slipped. See Building Frame.
5. Game
- Work on yourself first (see Monk Mode). A sign your value is rising is women starting conversations with you.
- The easiest openings come from women who notice you first.
- Otherwise, walk over, introduce yourself and make small talk. No scripted lines are needed. Hold back compliments early on.
- If she warms up when you see her again, ask her out, then escalate.
6. Dominance
Lead physically, mentally, emotionally and sexually: stay steady under stress, don't beg for approval, and make decisions. As a relationship deepens you can relax this. Long-term relationships also need warmth and support. See Guide to Dominance.
7. Maintenance
Keep improving. Learning new things keeps you interesting to yourself and to your partner. Standing still is what makes relationships go stale.
Key takeaways
- Body, then clothes, then purpose, then frame, then game, then leadership, then keep growing.
- Fix posture before lifting heavy, and fix the body before buying clothes.
- Simple, direct introductions beat scripted lines.
