The Hierarchy of Game

From Alpha Up Wiki

The Hierarchy of Game ranks the four areas a man can work on by how much each one improves the others:

Physique → Inner Game → Outer Game → Presentation

How it works

Think of four buckets in a waterfall. When one fills and overflows, it spills into every bucket below it, but never into the ones above.

  • A better physique improves inner game, outer game and presentation.
  • Better inner game (mindset) improves outer game and presentation.
  • Better outer game (how you interact) improves presentation.
  • Better presentation (clothes, grooming) improves only itself.

So effort counts for more the higher up it goes: a little progress in the gym is worth more than a lot of progress on your wardrobe.

Why physique is at the top

Lifting forces a routine. Training on set days at set times means organising the rest of your life around it, setting priorities and following through. That discipline carries into how you think and act everywhere else. You earn your strength, so you expect others to earn your trust and approval too, which is the core of a strong Inner Game.

How each level shows

  • Physique: clothes fit better, and lower body fat sharpens your face.
  • Inner game: better posture, and confidence that shows in how you hold yourself.
  • Outer game: you can brush off teasing about your looks or clothes.
  • Presentation: grooming and style. It finishes the picture but doesn't build anything underneath.

Discipline vs motivation

You might argue that dressing better makes you feel confident and therefore train harder. The author's answer: that is motivation, which comes and goes. Training builds discipline, which lasts. That's why the hierarchy only flows one way.
