Using Feminism to your Advantage
Instead of fighting feminism, this post argues men should recognise the ways it actually benefits them, and use that in how they relate to women.
Don't argue, adapt
The author thinks feminism has gone too far in places, with less value in marriage and denial of real sex differences, but says it's here to stay. Arguing with committed ideologues is a waste of time. "Feminism is a cobra; be the mongoose": win by being better, not by pleading.
Most women hold some feminist views, from extreme positions to simply wanting a fair shot at a good life. Treat it like a light test: walk away from the extremes, and meet ordinary views with good-humoured confidence (see Shit Tests 101).
Four advantages for men
- Sexual
- Women are now free to want sex openly. With contraception, sex outside marriage is normal and is an exchange between equals, not something a man "takes".
- Personal honesty
- Being free to admit what they want makes women, the author argues, more honest and generally happier. Happier partners mean less drama and better company.
- Intellectual
- More women than men now go to university, so there are many more women who are interesting to talk to and can argue their views well.
- Economic
- Women earn their own money, so a man no longer has to support two people, pay for every date or risk his finances. (The author adds that avoiding marriage protects assets.)
In practice
- If feminism comes up, say briefly that you're fine with it because it benefits men too, and mention the advantages above. It flips the conversation into your frame and avoids a fight.
- Keep a relaxed, amused confidence. Her views aren't a threat to you.
- She can be independent and empowered and still enjoy a man who leads. The two aren't in conflict.
