Goals - A beginners guide on how to attain them
Appearance
A practical framework for setting goals and sticking to them, whether in dating, fitness or anything else. It has five parts: specific, measurable, tracked, practical, and kept on track.
1. Be specific
Write your goals down in detail:
- What do you want, short and long term?
- Where will you do it?
- When: what's the target date?
- Who can help: a mentor, coach, training partner or wingman?
2. Make it measurable
Set numbers you can check: how many conversations a week, how many hours, how many sessions.
3. Track it
Write down your progress every day. The act of recording improves consistency and keeps you accountable. A good log includes:
- What you did.
- How long you spent.
- How hard you pushed: did you stretch yourself or play it safe?
- What got in the way, so you can solve it next time.
4. Keep it practical
Is it realistic in the time you've given yourself? Know your limits and plan around them.
5. Stay on track
Starting is hard; sticking with it is harder. Expect slips, and plan for them.
- Keep it meaningful. Remind yourself why it matters to you.
- Reward yourself for hitting milestones, big and small.
- Catch slips early. One slip doesn't have to become a spiral.
- Restart immediately. Don't wait for Monday or the first of the month.
- Learn from past slips and plan ahead for tricky periods like holidays and trips.
- Have a backup plan. What could get in your way, how will you handle it, and what's plan B?
Success isn't a line with no dips; it's moving forward overall despite them.
