Facebook Openers

From Alpha Up Wiki

Messaging someone you've come across on social media (Facebook, Instagram), a friend of a friend or someone you met briefly, is different from a dating app: she hasn't signed up to be messaged. Be light, specific and low-pressure.

Principles

  • Give context. How do you know her, or how did you come across her? "We were both at Sam's barbecue" beats a cold message.
  • Be specific. Comment on a photo, trip, pet or interest, not just her looks.
  • Be playful, not intense. A light question or tease works better than a long message.
  • Keep it short and easy to reply to.
  • Take no reply as an answer. Don't send a string of follow-ups.

Example openers

  • "Tell me, [name], are you as interesting as your travel photos make you look?"
  • "Okay, I have to ask: is that your dog, or did you borrow the cutest dog in the city for a photo?"
  • "We were at the same party last weekend and I never got to say hi. Consider this me saying hi."
  • "Settle a debate: was that hike as brutal as it looks, or are you just very good at making it look easy?"
